Generally speaking, a base station consists of a GPS receiver, GPS antenna, base station radio, and requires a power supply.  The receiver should be placed somewhere in the station where those using the radio will be equidistant in range, and as high as possible.  The antenna may be separate from the actual base station, in which case it should be placed outside and not near buildings, towers, trees, or vehicles.

Performance

You may experience electromagnetic interference if the base station is placed too near some things— electric motors, equipment using DC-to-AC converters, televisions, computer monitors, fluorescent lights, and spark plugs.  An SPS Modular receiver may also help in the quality of performance (with the help of another antenna placed on a tower or tall building).

The base station must be plugged into a power source to function, as most do not typically run using batteries.  For optimum performance— input and output frequencies should be spaced as far apart as possible (though historically, some have functioned with only a difference of 175 kHz).

Initial Conditioning for Your Two-Way Radio Battery

Although most manufacturers condition the battery before allowing it to leave the warehouse, sometimes these radios may sit on the shelf in a factory or store before making their way to your house, so it’s always a good idea to do this step anyways. If the battery comes pre-charged, you will want to run the radio until the battery is completely dead.

Once the battery is dead, turn the radio off and allow the battery to completely charge undisturbed. For best results, you will want to follow this procedure for the first three full charges for your new radio.

Maintenance of Your Two-Way Radio Battery

Once you have followed the process for the initial conditioning of the battery, however, the strategy changes completely. Do not wait until the battery needs a full charge to plug it in. When you do plug it in, do not leave it charging for hours at a time. The goal is to keep it comfortably charged at all times without prolonged periods of time on the charger, which can cause the battery to overheat and therefore shorten its life.

Every two to three months, you will want to run the battery completely dead and give it a full charge, as you did when you first conditioned the battery. This will help prevent the build-up of crystals inside of the battery, which can cause permanent damage to the battery.

Ideally you should use your two-way radio regularly to keep the battery in top shape. However, if you do have to leave it unused for some time, do not leave the battery completely uncharged. A dead, unused battery is very prone to crystal growth, which can prove to be quite damaging.

Storage of Your Two-Way Radio Battery

Whenever you are not using your two-way radio, store it in a location that is cool and dry. Excessive temperatures can severely damage the battery. Moisture may corrode the battery. Your car is one of the worst places you could leave your two-way radio, as the interior of a vehicle can get very hot when it is not running, especially in the warm summer months.

With proper care and maintenance, your two-way radio and its battery should work well and serve you for a long time.
